Deer Poem

As silent as a deer,

Yet deer are not silent.

So where is the silence that people hear?

And where do I find some?

Is it in the space between your steps?

Is it in between the broken twigs?

Is it in between the leaves that you’ve turned over?

Or is it in the turned over leaves themselves?

The twigs?

The steps?

Or have you stolen the silence of the deer with firepower?

With eyes closed, do you hear the screams of the forest?

Or do you hear the silence in between?

And what is more important to you?

The silence, or the footsteps of the silent deer.
